Working to develop new diabetes therapies

Pennington Biomedical researchers were recently awarded funding from the LSU LIFT2 Fund in round four of LSU's grant program. The Leverage Innovation for Technology Transfer fund, or LIFT2 grant, will provide approximately $23,000 in funding to Drs. Richard Rogers*, Gerlinda Hermann and Jason Collier for a project entitled "Assay for Evaluation of Diabetes Therapeutics." Our researchers are among 20+ other faculty members across LSU campuses to receive LIFT2 awards in this round of funding.

Created by the LSU Board of Supervisors in January 2014, the fund helps support further commercialization of innovation and establishes data to support commercial feasibility of innovation.

As noted by Drs. Rogers, Hermann and Collier in their grant application, "We developed a method for assaying the ability of pancreatic beta cells to respond to glucose and secrete insulin. The assay also assesses the ability of target tissues to respond to insulin. The assay will accelerate the development of treatments for diabetes by lowering costs and increasing the speed of evaluating therapeutic molecules or disease models. This LIFT proposal will fund the development of the methods necessary to transfer the technology from an experimental platform to that of a common fluorometric culture plate reader. This 'pancreas on a plate' assay system will be ready for commercialization with the achievement of this milestone."

Grant awards like this one can provide the key 'proof-of-concept' resources needed to move those ideas from the lab bench to the patient's bedside."
